Endings

Endings are so bittersweet.

Endings are so sweet and sour.

Endings are just really something else beginning.

Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.

My Taboo Word Challenge ends today. Numerous bloggers took part and excelled at it. You’ll find a link to read these other blogs down below. We used what Google reports as our top 20 most used words. Today’s word is a toughy, but I’m not telling you what it is, yet. See if you can figure it out.

I once wrote a post (albiet a short post) without using a single “e”. I learned that I as I continued to write it became easier to find words I wanted that didn’t have an “e” but retained its meaning. My experience here was nearly identical; difficult at first but easier as I kept writing.

Much like exercise, it’s hard at first. Difficult to keep a routine. Difficult to complete a workout without wanting to passout. Difficult to stop eating junk food. However, with dedication, determination, and whole lotta sweat, you get better. It gets easier.

All through September I gathered a small, yet loyal, band of bloggers to take on this challenge. Take Google’s list of most used words and write your post without it. We did it and today it ends. Our last word. I want to thank and congratulate those who joined me. I tried to read as many of your posts as I could.

I’m not sad it’s over. We bloggers will continue blogging. I’m sure I’m alone when I say it will be nice to not have to constantly check what taboo word isn’t to be used.

When it’s over, we are left with memories and memories (usually) last a whole lot longer…

One day I’ll only have memories of them being kids…

Today’s Taboo word was “the”.  To read more posts without my Taboo Words just click the blue frog…

Go Ask Your Father: Earth, LED Bulbs, Antibiotics, and Graffiti

Fall’s first day has come and gone. The leaves haven’t started changing quite yet. They are, however, starting to fall off. On the road, piled against the curb are all the leaves that make autumn lovable. Light and crispy on top, moist underneath. Just like I like my brownies.

Speaking about brownies, I found this recipe for some that look and sound amazing. They’re called Peanut Butter Cup Crack Brownies. You can find the recipe at CookiesAndCups.com. I checked the recipe. Crack isn’t an ingredient. With all that yumminess crack isn’t necessary.

Now that you’re done drooling all over your keyboard, lets answer some questions.

How does the earth move?

In simple terms, gravity. Gravity makes everything fall, though it’s not responsible for people falling in love (thanks, Einstein). The sun is huge, mammoth, massive, gargantuan. The easiest way to imagine it is that it creates a bowl in space fabric around it. The planets then roll around the rim in their orbits.

giphy

I once read a book on antigravity. I couldn’t put it down!

You have to remember that while the Earth is orbiting around the sun, the sun is also moving through space as our galaxy travels. So we’re not going in circles so much as a downward spiral. It’ll be more a plummet than spiral should Trump get elected.

How does an LED light work?

We just replaced our poisonous, mercury ridden, twisty light bulbs with LED light bulbs. I explained TIE fighters and ion engines the other day. In my “research” (does Googling it count as research?) on how LEDs work I discovered that it’s over my head. Way over. Like, it’s up there where the overseas jumbo sail in the jet stream. Here’s how I have come to understand it. LEDs are completely different from incandescent bulbs in that they use a different technology. An LED uses a semiconductor (a solid material that conducuts electricity like rush hour on a Friday – slowly). It’s usually made with aluminum-gallium-arsenide (aka metals, I just wanted to say arsenide). This semiconductor has a positive side and a negative side. The positive side has “holes” while the negative side has electrons. When electricity passes through, the electrons on the negative side rush over and fill in the “holes” on the positive side (like that idiot on the motorcycle squeezing in between you and that truck your tailing). When the “hole” gets filled energy is released (road rage, probably) as photons. Photons = light. There’s more to than that, but that’s as much as I can understand it. My monkey brain can’t comprehend it beyond that.

What is an antibiotic?

Our bodies are in constant warfare. Fortunately, they’re equipped with a military that is armed and ready for the battle. Gorilla warfare. Black Ops style. These white blood cells attack bacteria without mercy. But sometimes the bacteria attack in such force that the white blood cells become overwhelmed. That’s when we get sick. Our white blood cells need reinforcements. Antibiotics. Bactericidals, like penicillin, kills the bacteria by interfering with the bacterium’s cell wall formation or its cell contents. Bacteriostatics stop the bacterium’s growth. There is no debate that they cause autism or if they really work. However, there is serious debate about too much antibiotic causing bacterium to become immune to it. Once that happens the antibiotic is no longer effective. Like listening to Let It Go too many times, we don’t even hear it. Also, antibiotics are as useless as screen doors on a submarine against viruses – colds, sore throats, the flu, chicken pox and measles.

What is graffiti?

There’s American Graffiti – George Lucas’s 1973 film about some high school grads cruising town before they leave for college. We’re not talking about that Graffiti, though. We’re talking about the art work. In general, graffiti can be described as writing or drawings scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place. This is what some local graffiti looks like (I left out the foul language and drug references)

However, some graffiti is much more elaborate. Some work on public surfaces like Picasso worked in blues.

Month in Review

summer-fall-resized-600

August has come and gone. We enjoyed the summer while it was here. We made trips to the beach and trips to the splash pad. We made many trips to baseball practices and games, too. But how did the blog get along?

August saw 27 posts with a grand total of 1,520 views, 138 more than July. I finally crested 1,500 again. I might be back on the incline of the rollercoaster of views.

There were 556 visitors. That’s 16 more!

The “like” button was clicked 77 more times in August than in July with 544 likes 🙂 I’m so glad y’all liked my posts so much! I like you, too!

There was great discussion in August. In fact, 493 comments were left on my posts. That’s 99 more than August had!

33 countries came to visit my little corner blog. Amazing! The top three were the U.S., Canada and the Netherlands. Australia, you were a very close fourth! Last month Australia and the Netherlands were in opposite positions. What a battle to get the bronze!

Besides my homepage, Behind the Scenes Blogging got the gold in the most viewed page competition with 78 views. This is where I answered some questions about how I blog. I Imagine A Day captured the silver with 67 views. I really believed this one would get more attention. It’s about the ideal teaching/education system. The Best Birthday Card Ever In the History earned the bronze with 51 views. My son made the most fantastic 40th birthday Star Wars card.

The end of August brought my 500th WordPress follower. I’m currently at 544 followers. That’s a gain of 73! WOWZER! I don’t know where we’re going, but we’re having a grand time getting there! We’re not lost, just wandering.

Next up… the top six commenters. This is really what keeps me blogging. The views are nice. The likes are good. But it’s the comments and the discussions that drive my blog forward. You make me laugh. You make me think. You make me want to keep writing more more more! Thank you to all of you.

Sandra  of A Momma’s View on “Share Your World”
Elen of Elen Grey on “Single Shot Monday”
Daley of The Invisible Moth on “The Adventures of Cat-Littering
Pieter of AhDad on “Laugh With Me #48”

It’s the same six as last month, just  a different order! C’mon everyone, knock these people off the charts. Not that I want them off the charts because I really like them.

Things are picking up in the blog world. We’re all back to school. My half of the world is slowly edging its way toward fall and winter while the other half slowly marches toward spring and summer. I enjoy fall so much, though. Not because of pumpkin spice either. Pumpkin pie, yes. Apple pie, most definitely. Once upon a time I didn’t like apple pie. Then one day in high school I decided I liked it.

Questions I Asked My Kids About School

Just as a foreword, these questions were asked at totally separate times. Neither one saw each other’s answers. Yet their answers are very similar. Who doesn’t love gym, though!

1 What was your favorite part of school today?

Crash: Gym
Bang: The gym

What is one thing you learned about today?

Crash: Filling out stuff (he filled in a hundreds chart)
Bang: I learned a new game in gym

3 What did you eat for lunch?

Crash: Ham/cheese/turkey wrap, Goldfish, strawberries, Oreo crackers (Thinsations)
Bang: Cheese, butter crackers, granola bar

4 What is your teacher like?

Crash: Extremely nice (he needs strict, not nice)
Bang: She is kind.

5 What’s one thing you want to learn in school this year?

Crash: Division or how to do a backflip in gym
Bang: Play new games

6 Did you or your teacher read any books today?

Crash: I did. I read two chapters of Geromino Stilton The Journey Through Time “Midieval Mission”
Bang: The Kissing Hand

7 What’s your favorite thing to do in school?

Crash: Math (This is shocking, actually. He used to hate math)
Bang: Play in the water table

8 What did you play at recess?

Crash: All I can remember is that it was two friends and I. All we did was walk around.
Bang: I was playing train and saying “All Aboard!” and I was climbing up to steer the train.

9 Did anything funny happen at school?

Crash: One friend did something funny (I don’t remember what he did) and another friend said “real funny friend”
Bang: My teacher read one book that was funny. I don’t remember what book it was.

10 Did you have any dreams?

Crash: Yes. I was getting a newspaper from the dumpster and then I fell in. Then the recycling truck came and it threw me in the back into the stinky garbage. It went to the dump and that’s when I woke up.
Bang: Nope.

Sunday Share Challenge

This past Thursday saw the kickoff of the Taboo Word Challenge. The challenge (I think) got off to a fairly easy start. Writers had to write omitting “at” one day and “do” the next. I have no doubt the challenge will kickstart some creative thinking in the next couple weeks as the words ramp up the difficulty level. Check out these posts who successfully conquered the first two days…

Questions I Asked My Kids

OMG! OMG! Guess what today is! It’s September 1st. In case you have forgotten (like I almost did) the Taboo Word Challenge starts today! It’s not too late to join. In fact, it’s open to join all month! The word list is in my sidebar. There’s a new word for each weekday. Today’s taboo word is “at”. Can you write a post without it?

For me, it will be easy to do today. It’s question day. A day that will make you laugh, giggle, chuckle, or just make you breath out of your nose really hard. Please don’t get snot on anything should you choose the last option. Though with two kids running around here, snot is not in short supply for us…

Happy reading!

1 What’s something adults do that you can’t do but wish you could?

Crash: Stay up late every night
Bang: Lift a giant bolt

2 Did you have any dreams?

Crash:
Bang: I was biking on the grass and my back tire fell off. You couldn’t put it back on and neither could I so you called the cops to help.

Crash: Oh God. I have no clue. Um.. a creeper.
Bang: A ghost.

4 What are you most excited to do in school?

and yours truly…

If you haven’t heard about this challenge yet, it’s very simple. You continue blogging as you normally would. If you blog every day, awesome! If you blog every other day, awesome! If you blog when you can, awesome! Anyone is free to join. Just click the blue frog!

Here are the easy rules to follow:

  1. Don’t use the word Taboo Word of the day in your blog. Whatever day your post is being published, write it without that day’s word. If you post multiple time per day this rule only applies to one of your posts.
  2. Visit at least one of the other from the Linky list. This is as much a meet and greet as it is a challenge.
  3.  Get the nLinkz code and share it on each of your challenge posts!

Now for the Taboo Words! Please share them because the more the merrier!

Taboo Word Challenge

There will be a new challenge coming to the blogosphere in September. Warm up your thinking caps. Loosen up those blogging fingers. After those pesky kids get back to school we’ll start up this new and exciting adventure!

It requires you to do nothing but blog as you normally would. There are no photos or topics to write about. However, there will be something missing.

Each post you make will be missing a word… or rather written without using a given word. I have 20 words chosen. Each day, the taboo word will be a little harder to omit so you’ll have to be creative. The challenge will start on the first of September and run until the 28th. It’ll be a Monday to Friday challenge so there will be no taboo words on the weekends. I’ll post the full taboo word list on the 21 of August for those who like to plan ahead. Check back here then!

Simply visit the Linky below and click to enter and join the party! Hope to see you there!

Oh… and please share this post however you can to help me spread the word. The more the merrier!
