I’ve written about Earth before. Several times, actually. I shared a video last June narrated by Julia Roberts. I have since learned there are a slew of these video narrated by various celebrities and cover all facets of our Mother Earth. Oceans. Rainforests. The Sky.
Today, Team Wood did our small part. Every spring our community organizes a town clean-up. Today was the fourth annual clean up. According to organizers there were about 30 volunteers who showed up. She guessed the numbers were low because today was the first full day of sunshine in over a week. We knew where we wanted to clean, so, upon registration, we just informed them where we were going. We were handed 8 very large garbage bags and 1 clear bag for refundables, then set off. The sun was shining. The kids were excited. With gloves donned we were cleaning up a ditch along main street.
That’s a glimpse of what it was like before we started. This gully was about 75 meters long and it looked like this the entire length. It was also parallel to a heavily trafficked road. This is what visitors to our town would see. So we cleaned it up.
The boys were on a mission for an hour and half and DW and I were both impressed with their determination and attitudes. In past clean up they had been less than helpful. DW talked to them afterwards telling them to remember this when they are older and out with their friends. The Earth is not a garbage can. When people treat it like this we end up having to clean up their mess. So should they or their friends be tempted to just throw their garbage on the ground, remember this day, remember this is the only Earth we have. How difficult would be to just put it in a garbage can?
Here’s what it looked like after filling 4 very large garbage bags and a bag of refundables…
How do you help Mother Earth? If you’re looking for a clean place to go, find my exceptionally tidy place on Facebook and Twitter!
Great work Eric! An excellent life lesson for your kids too. It’s such a shame so many people do seem to think the world is a garbage bin. We really should check if they organize something similar here in the area…

Thanks, SB! It’s definitely a lesson that is sticking because neither one has littered. Our house is another story. I wish they’d put their garbage in the garbage can at home instead of just leaving it!

Very nicely done, kids! I have to say Singapore does this very well when it comes to keeping clean – a hefty fine for littering. And it lives up to its name for being a FINE city. 😜

I’ve heard Singapore is spotless. Perhaps we should be following their example.

Totally spotless. A very green city and very clinical. Just getting to over-crowded. I do think the hefty fines worked. I mean..I have been fined twice – one for littering, another for jaywalking. Not cheap!!! And I have to go counselling to get my ID card back where they “taught” me how to litter properly!

That’s amazing! How many officers does it take to enforce that? I’m thinking we don’t have enough.

hmmmm…the nation has been conditioned. There are plain clothes police loitering around. Right time, tight place. You gotta be so unlucky.

Trouble with WordPress? When I call your site up from Yahoo, the reply box grows stagnant and I’ve actually locked up. Have you been having complications too?

No complications on this end. That’s weird. Hope it gets figured out!

Thanks. I think it may be a matter of concurrent changes being made to page (edit and reply). It exhausts the elasticity of the “response.” (I worked in web publishing and encountered similar effects.) But, hey, I’m retired now and not even a Dad. Is the sun out?

You certainly sound tech savvy. The sun still isn’t out. It’s in the clouds 🙂

I — or should I say “we’, at que Bottle — help the environment by manufacturing 100% plastic-free, biodegradable, food-grade silicone water bottles. We’re in it for the long run. We want to clean up the oceans, remove plastic from our shores, and provide a safe, non-toxic alternative for people. Everyone uses water bottles, so we might as well supply the most environmentally safe one to them. Thanks for this food-for-thought! Always wonderful to see others spreading the word of sustainability. 🙂

That’s amazing! Thank you for providing such an environmentally friendly substitute! That reminds me of the biodegradable rings used to hold aluminum cans together. Something that gets used alot and it NOT so eco friendly. Keep up the good fight!
