Today marks the 15th anniversary of 9/11. I remember it vividly. I was in the small college town of Frostburg, Maryland, working as a resident director and co-teaching a freshman orientation class. I entered class at 8 am or a few minutes before and was chatting with the students who had already arrived waiting for my teaching partner. He comes in a few minutes late and breaks the news to us. At that time only one of the Trade Towers had collapsed. We convened and quickly decided to cancel class so that we could back to our dorms to help out any students who may need it and to allow our students to make the contacts they needed.

Upon my return to my dorm, I found out the Trade Tower had collapsed, a plane had crashed into the pentagon and another crashed 45 minutes north of campus in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania.

  1. I was actually abroad during this attack… It was 1-2 p.m. in Britain while we watched the reports on the BBC emergency news alert. I didn’t (still don’t) know anyone living in the city, or in/near D.C., but I know people who do have family/friends in those areas, so there was a very real sense of terror hitting home.

  2. I was only 8 years old. I remember being in primary school the older years were all taken into the hall and told what had happened don’t think we realised the gravity of what had happened at the time.
Thank you for sharing my post 🙂

    • You’re very welcome. Your post reminded me of a story about a boy throwing starfish back into the ocean and someone asked why he was doing that because there so many he couldn’t possibly make a difference and the boy replied with “It makes a difference to the ones I throw back” The small things really do matter…

      • How beautiful! Kids are amazing!

Years ago my son did this on one of our beaches. I told him that the ones he was throwing back where the ones the Australian Government doesn’t want us to safe as are a threat to the local ones eating all their food. He looked at me shook his head and said that the sea stars are not doing it on purpose but only to survive. And then the two of us continued throwing them back in the water… I was constantly thinking about concentration camps… not sure why… but I decided “screw the government” 😉
