I’m Bored

God help my kids if I ever hear those two words uttered this summer. Inevitably, they’re said on the 2nd day of summer vacation.

We have a good crew of kids in our little development now. Some are a bit older than Crash and some are bit younger than Bang. We’ve got the ages covered. This means there are plenty of others their age to play with.

But more than than just having others to play with is the amount there is to do now.

  • Trampoline
  • Soccer
  • Road hockey
  • Basketball
  • Frisbee/disk golf
  • Swing set
  • Sandbox
  • Bikes
  • Scooters
  • Rollerblades
  • Baseball

And that’s just the stuff they can play in the driveway and backyard. We have a beautiful (read huge) park to play on. It has just received an upgrade. Flex court was just laid on Sunday. The basketball court looks amazing! There’s talk of making it a multi-purpose  court by painting lines for ball hockey as well as basketball. Plus there’s a huge splash pad at the park, too.

This is by no means my summer bucket list. That post will be coming later when summer is closer than a month and half.

So help me if I hear either one of my kids says “I’m bored” at any give time, do you know what they’ll be doing? I’ve already told them this. I’ve given them their warning.

They’ll be doing chores.

  • Mowing
  • Vacuuming
  • Dusting
  • Loading/unloading the dishwasher
  • Cleaning the bathroom
  • Cleaning their room
  • Picking up their toys
  • Cleaning Timbit’s cage (the hamster)
  • Putting laundry away
  • Whatever other busy work I can come up with

I’m just putting this out there now. For us, the first day of summer vacation isn’t until June 30th. But nice weather is upon us so I’m just preparing myself and the kids.

    • HA! They do some chores. We went through this whole phase of trying to make them do chores daily and get paid weekly. It was still such a fight after two months that we quit paying them and just make them do chores every now and then… a few times a week. This summer they’ll both be in baseball so they’ll have practices to attend (and Crash will have some games). I’ll have to catch a few more episode of Super Nanny to brush up on my parenting skills 🙂

      • Oh, yes, I had my share of little league, both with my son and then my grandson. It keeps them busy and worn out, which is a good thing. They should not be paid to help with their own home. Kids don’t appreciate deferred gratification. Sounds like you are on top of things. You are such an involved dad, it tickles me.

  4. Omg, y’all live in an amazeballs area! We live in opposite world pretty much, but after griping about being tired of school, I’ll be happy to break out some cursive handwriting practice should LM say he’s bored.

  5. When I was a kid, I dreaded the approach of summer vacation. It meant staying around my mother 24/7, and that usually wasn’t pleasant (especially when we went to the variety store and we roamed for what seemed like hours, looking for that one thing that one purchase we were allowed to make, which we lost interest in as soon as we arrived home 🙂 …), and that was when she allowed us to make a purchase. Otherwise, being around my mother all the time meant that we couldn’t leave the yard, not even to venture into the fields that surrounded our yard. She wasn’t usually very pleasant to be around then (actually she was never much fun to be around at any time). I don’t have children, and actually am old enough for grandchildren (if I had any children, of course), but I don’t get to spoil them. But I do have the freedom to go hop the bus to the local Walmart and spend all that money that I shouldn’t have.

  7. That is a wonderful cure for the “I’m bored” theory. Summer vacation started for my 15 year last Friday. She has gone none stop since then and last night she came home from art class, informed me that she was going to shower and crash. I can totally see her sleeping today away. I am kinda jealous…

    • LOL Thanks. Luck will definitely be needed. The trampoline is the awesomest. They were in the sprinkler yesterday. I don’t think that one even made my list. I’m with you on chores. Chores suck.

  9. Oh gawd… I have a love/hate relationships with summer vacation… The words “I’m bored” make me cringe. How can my hellions be so bored when I have such an eternal, unyielding, relentless list of s#it to do??

    • And they expect us to entertain them when they’re “bored”. I’m not Tom Hanks, I don’t entertain. So when they’re bored they’ll be helping me get this relentless pile of s#it done! 😀

  10. I just love that young parents like you are dealing with boredom just like I did (and my mom before me): ‘Bored, are you? I have a basement you can clean!’ Chores are a most wonderful boredom cure!

  11. My kids spent the entire weekend at a festival camping outdoors, rock climbing, circus skills…. They are now into day two of half term and….. they’re bored. And it’s raining! I have one playing lego, one upstairs and one watching TV. Teachers are soooo underpaid! #FabFridayPost

    • They never seem to be busy enough, do they? Even after going and going and going they refuse to just sit and relax a minute. Good luck surviving the rainy day! Lego is great. We have fun making up stories with our Lego characters. Thanks for stopping by!

  12. I like your chores list – since when the kids’ pet is a parent responsibility – if they want pet them they must look after it. I learned this the hard way as a kid who always want a rabbit – my wish came true but honestly it was a stinky one too! lol!

  13. I recently discovered a book called UNBORED on Amazon that has a bunch of different activities for kids/family to do. Variations of common games like hide and seek as well as games using technology. Obviously Baby D is too young for them right now but I thought of my niece and nephews and told my sister about them. They’re on Amazon. Check them out! I think there are 3 of them and at least one of them has screen shots of some of the pages in the description.
